QuakeData Brief guide

Files menu

All the items to do with collection of data are on the ‘Files’ menu. Some are fixed views - 7 days, 30 days - and there is also a custom view where you can set the dates yourself.

You can also look at ‘archived’ revisions and events that have been deleted. Included on this menu are the tools to import USGS data and to export CSV files of the data for use in another program such as Excel.

File menus

Webs

This is your centre for going out to get information. There are items already provided by us, and you can add your own items as you need.

Webs menus

The four entries on the left are the current sites we provide for you - and we shall add to those as we go along. The entries on the right are created from what you choose to add yourself. (See settings for information on this.)

You can use the ‘Go to a Web Site’ menu item to put in whatever address you want.

Audio

From here you can go to the Seismographic Audio Data Centre where you can create wave file or files - if you have the data. You can batch load data and also concatenate (join together) files.

Seismographic Audio Centre

You can also play a wave file from this menu, but we do not pretend this is Windows Media player - play and stop are all you can do.

Settings

Here is how you can control how various parts of the program work, and also add your own web sites to the list.

Compact Tools

If you are using the Compact version as opposed to the full SQL Server version, you can make a backup of your database from here.

Compact backup menu

You will not see this menu if you are using the full SQL Server version.

Eventually, if you have both Compact and SQL Server on your system, you will be able to transfer the data from SQL Server to Compact. We envisage this as a useful tool for the classroom. The main data is kept and updated on the SQL Server and students can draw down the data and play around with it, without compromising the main data store.

Whilst there is currently no setting to achieve this next item, it is possible to have both SQL server and Compact on the same PC. If you need to do this let us know and we will tell you how this can be achieved.(We do this ourselves by the way.)

Window

This menu allows you to tile your open windows (this is a multiple document interface), or to close all of them.

When you have windows open, they are listed at the bottom of this menu.

Just click on an item to go to that window.

That’s about it. It was quite brief! You can find further information under 'Help Files'

And a P.S. There is a small utility that is also provided to automate the earthquake data downloads.
